Apple claims that the U.S.’s cellphone networks could suffer “potentially catastrophic” cyberattacks by iPhone-wielding hackers at home and abroad if iPhone owners are permitted to legally jailbreak their wireless devices. The Copyright Office is considering a request by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to legalize the widespread practice of jailbreaking, in which iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution through the iPhone App Store. Geez, who the hell are these people? Soulless drones programmed to live every day of their life by the book? Technology wouldn’t have advanced at all if the nerdiest of us didn’t hack into things to figure out how they work. On the bright side, making it illegal probably wouldn’t stop anyone. We’re REBELS.
